Family Adventures at Darwin Forest

May 31, 2019

Oh take me back..........

Last week we had the pleasure of staying at Landal Darwin Forest which is a beautiful park located at Matlock in the Derbyshire Peak District.

The park offers various cabin types to suit everyone and pets are welcome too which is really lovely. We’ve already been planning a trip with the dog next year.

We had 4 amazing days here exploring and enjoying all that the park has to offer..... Which is a lot!

You’ll be sure to find something great for your family while having lots of outdoor fun and relaxation in the spa or have a wander around the local attractions and take in them stunning views. Trust me it’s worth it!

I booked tickets for us to visit The Heights of Abraham which is 15 minutes from the park and costs £17 per person. Cailyn and Casey were free as they’re under 4 years of age.

I highly recommend this as it’s one of those attractions that has something for everyone. It’s educational, fun, outdoors, exciting and the views from the top are just beautiful.

A paying visit allows you into the caves which may sound scary but it’s incredible. We took both the kids down and while it may be a slippery route at points, everyone takes their time and holds onto the banister so please do consider it as there’s something pretty cool down there ....

(take a little look here)

Make sure you grab some Matlock Meadows Ice-Cream  while you’re there or if you miss that chance, don’t worry the park has many flavours at Little Monkeys for £2 per tub. We enjoyed Bubblegum and Rhubarb & Custard which we’re delicious!

There’s so much about the park that I could talk about it for hours, it was such a relaxing and fun week for us.

I definitely enjoyed some morning ME time at Evolution Spa which is £3.75 to use the facilities (sauna, steam room, Jacuzzi & hot/cold blast shower)

You can use the pool area free of charge.

Cailyn absolutely loved the pool and we even took Casey in for his FIRST swim! You can buy single pack swimming nappies and other swimming aids which is really handy if you forget or wish to buy when you’re there.

There’s a well thought out Trim Track through the woodland walk which we had a go at while having our daily walks with the kids. We found magical fairy houses and doors, enjoyed games along the way and took our photo with the famous #LanDoor. We visited the bug hotel, the pond and played the Darwin Forest drums in the sun.

All to Cailyns delight as she’s definitely one for adventure, just like her mummy!

About the cabin

We stayed at the meadows in a two bed Elite Vogue Plus with hot tub. All the cabins come equipped with cooking utensils, towels, shower accessories, washing up box and hair dryer so there’s really no need to bring anything with you.

There’s no washing machine however there is an on site laundry available.

Each cabin has a board game to play which you can swap the games over at reception when you’re finished. You can hire BBQ’s, child safety bed guards, veranda gates and plastic crockery with a refundable deposit.

WiFi is provided throughout the park which we found really good coverage to use social media, call or text.

We asked for a cot for Casey and I really loved that it was wood and not the material ones. He slept really well and we just brought his own bedding. Cailyn ate at the hired high chair which was also a fantastic wood design with great support for her eating at the table, making dinner time more fun. She never uses hers at home but on holiday she loves it .... kids eh?!

Our Favourite Moments

I asked Cailyn what her favourite thing about the holiday was and she said

“Soft Play & Swimming” Little Monkeys is an amazing area for families to let their kids burn off some energy while you can sit back enjoy some coffee or food from the cafe or maybe your more of a big kid and like to enjoy playing with your little one.

I did a poll on Instagram and many said they loved being a big kid and joining in compared to a smaller group that sat and had a coffee.... interesting!

For us it was being able to completely relax and feel right at home. I loved that everything we could possibly need was available on site, like the store, a great restaurant (Foresters) and Explorers Cafe at Little Monkeys. There’s a sense of being miles away but right at home, just perfect!

Chris loved playing Mini Golf and taking up the opportunity to pick out his favourite cabin.... forever planning something. He loved that each cabin is in its own little space surrounded by nature. The sound of the birds all day long is just so peaceful.

One things for sure we will be back and many of you have been asking, planning to visit or live very close and have already been or regularly use the facilities which is brilliant.

Massive thank you to Caroline and the team at Darwin Forest for our stay it really was a 5* experience. You can watch our saved highlights from the trip here....
